SLAPSHOT #18
“BRAVES CHOP DOWN LUMBERJACKS”
MONDAY MAY 14, 2012

Hope all you mothers had a great Mother’s day. I hope the kids took care of you all. It was a night of short benches and maybe short fuses as a lot of games had rather large penalty minutes, nothing too serious just a lot of minors.

So week number five is under way and things are starting to round themselves out a bit, great weather for the socializing after the games and great smiles all around by all. So lets get to the key achievements, Shout outs by #31 Pierre (Mr freeze) Laroche (Wild), #1 Tom Dorsey (Moscow Selects E) & #31 Stephane Portelance (Braves), Hat trick bys #53 Sebastien Slythe (Invaders), #4 Jesse Johnson (Gong Show), & #19 Ahmed Mahfouz (Bubba J’s). The big hammer on the night was #4 Jess Johnson (Gong Show) count em up six point night

Before I go any further: two reminders from league meetings:

1) R-E-S-P-E-C-T (Players, opponents & Officials)

2) Abuse to a league official or game official will not be tolerated at all, use your captains voice with the league. Take it in your own hands, pay the consequence.

Game of the night comes out of the D division, To end the night on, we had a remarkable show by two goaltenders, that shone, It would have been fitting for both goalies to get a tie (Braves & Lumberjacks) but did they?

Also make sure you do not put anything on the bench until the previous teams has left.

Keep in mind to all waivers must be filled out by players who did not play in GOBHA in 2011.

Reminder to all, any hand to face/head is 5 minute major and a game ejection, is it worth it?

REMINDER: YOU ONLY CHECK OFF THE PLAYERS THAT ARE AT THE GAME WHEN IT STARTS, ANY LATE ARRIVING PLAYERS MUST REPORT IN TO THE REF OR TIME KEEPER BEFORE STEPPING ON FLOOR OR IT IS A TWO MINUTE MINOR.

Here is a light humour for you.

Q: Why did the Post Office recall their latest stamps?
A: They had pictures of New York Rangers players on them and people couldn’t figure out which side to spit on.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK – WEEK FOUR

B DIVISION – #94 ZACK RHEAUME – ATTACK
C DIVISION – #17 JUSTIN RUDOLPH – DRAGONS

M DIVISION – #3 PIERRE CARON – INVADERS

How about your Ottawa Fat Cats Baseball team, well they are off to a struggling start so far this season, just lost in Kitchener Sunday 14-9 to the Panthers so their record stands at 1-3 good for sixth place in the early season. Remember Fat Cats tickets are FREE for GOBHA players simply email me at dballoch@ottawafatcats.com in the subject line GOBHA and how many tickets you want for what game. HOME OPENER SAT MAY 19TH 7:00PM AGAINST KITCHERN PANTHERS.

Last nights action saw:

4:00 Vanier: (E) Plan B Vs Streetrats: Absolute joke, way too many penalties, too much unsportsmanlike by Plan B, guys when you get a good lead, show boating and chirping is weak. Plan B 6-3 GAME STARS – #7 NICK CARBONETTO AND #5 MATT VADNAIS – STREETRATS

5:00 Vanier: (E) Ottawa Kings Vs Therapists: What happens when you take too many dumb penalties, oh yeah you lose. Well Ottawa kings have nobody to look at but themselves for the loss on this one. #9 Rob Sibbald and his Therapists will remain undefeated in the division thanks to some power play time against Ottawa Kings. Rob would contribute a goal and a helper in this one and his Therapists go to 7-0. Ottawa kings served 24 minutes in penalties, makes you go hmmmmmmm. Make the final 4-3 Therapists. GAME STARS – #9 – ROB SIBBALD – THERAPISTS AND #71 PATRICK ISABELLE – OTTAWA KINGS.

5:00 Delude: (E) Yellow Bellies Vs Moscow Selects: #1 Tom Dorsey picking up his second shut out of the season for his Moscow Selects as they were victorious 3-0 Yellow Bellies came hard and ran hard but just no match for the solid goaltending. All three goals were scored in the opening half giving the Moscow Selects a 3-0 half time lead, then they would hatch down the fort and play a defensive tight game, make the final 3-0. GAME STARS – #1 TOM DORSEY – MOSCOW SELECTS E AND #31 – TIM SATURNO – YELLOW BELLIES.

6:00 Vanier: (E) Blue Eagles Vs Gong Show: The first half of this game was absolutely amazing half and to boot, Blue Eagles up 2-1, then #4 Jess Johnson took over the game for Gong show, let’s see what did Jesse accomplish? Well counting his helper in the first, he would score a hat trick in the second and add another two helpers for a career high six point night. The speed and tenacity of the Gong Show was just too much for Blue Eagles. Make the final 7-2 Gong Show and their third victory in a row. GAME STARS – #4 JESSE JOHNSON – GONG SHOW AND #11 – DAN ARCHIBALD – BLUE EAGLES.

6:00 Delude: (M) Jets Vs Steelheads: #9 Dom Peluso, knew the Steelheads were thinking about maybe pulling off their first victory of the season. That is where Dom made sure it ended. Dom would have a pair of helpers in the opening half of the game to give his Jets the 5-2 lead at the half, he would score in the third and the Jets would get victory number two on the season 6-3, over a struggling Steelheads team. GAME STARS – #9 – DOM PELUSO – JETS AND #98 ANDREW MAXWELL – STEELEHADS.

7:00 Vanier: (B) Bubba J’s Vs Fog Devils: Fog Devils showed up with a short teams missing some key players and you could see how the frustration mounted with them as the game went along. #19 Ahmed Mahfouz led the charge as normal with a hat trick and a pair of helpers as Bubba J’s would get back on the winning streak with the 6-3 victory. Ahmed would score a short handed goal as well in the game which sent tensions throughout the Fog Devils and they were off their game. GAME STARS – #19 AHMED MAHFOUZ – FOG DEVILS AND #10 OLIVIER SMITH – FOG DEVILS

7:00 Delude: (M) Invaders Vs Attack: The two rivals would meet in this one and the high powered offence of the Invaders were the victors in this one. #53 Sebastien Slythe would have an opening period hat trick and getting his Invaders out to the 4-1 lead, they would hold on to an Attack charge and walk away with the 5-3 victory. The loss for Attack was their first in 2012. GAME STARS – #53 SEBASTIEN SLYTHE – INVADERS AND #4 DAN DUFRESNE – ATTACK

8:00 Vanier: (B) Flying Frenchmen Vs Hull Volant: Finally the Hull Volant have something to celebrate, their first victory of the season, it did not come easy either, when #9 Stephane Ducharme scored to give his Flying Frenchmen the 3-2 lead with just over three minutes left, Hull Volant know they were in trouble. Another loss faced them. #9 Joey mongeon would tie the game up with just over a minute left and Hull Volant would win in the shootout , goaltending for Hull Volant was the key issue they got the shoot out victory, GAME STARS – #31 – JEAN PIERRE MOURNIER – HULL VOLANT AND #9 STEPHANE DUCHARME – FLYING FRENCHMEN

8:00 Delude: (A) Young Guns Vs Capital H’s: What a great effort by the Capital H’s in this one, however when your facing that young Guns line up, which doesn’t have many holes it is always tough, with the opening period being scoreless, and Young Guns totally wondering when the Capital H’s would break it finally happened. The score would stay 1-0 until the final five minutes of the game where as Young Guns would score twice, once with the goalie pulled and make the final 3-1 GAME STARS #31 – MARK YEATES – YOUNG GUNS AND #4 – BRETT KELLY – CAPITAL H’S

9:00 Vanier: (D) Traitors Vs Shanks: I can tell you if the Shanks would have put as much effort into worrying about their own play as they did what the refs were doing they may have been in this one, however, #19 Tyler McCloskey and his Traitors would take advantage of a couple of power plays and put this one out of reach early and only adding frustration to the Shanks bench, who just self destructed and Traitors would walk away with the 5-1 victory. GAME STARS – #19 TYLER MCCLOSKEY – TRAITORS AND #71 – CARLOS OLIVEIRA – SHANKS.

9:00 Delude: (A) Wolf Pack Vs Wild: Not a bad game to start with but when you face the Wild, you are facing a team of guys that know ball hockey and know it well. Wolf Pack with all their raw talent are an ice hockey team and if they were to stick together for years would be great but guys like #00 John Chu, play ball hockey and John would ice the game away with a goal and a helper in the second half, #31 Pierre Laroche would shut the door on everything and the Wild would get another victory to remain undefeated, make this one 4-0 GAME STARS – #00 JOHN CHU – WILD AND #1 LOUIS TREMMAGLIA – WOLF PACK

10: Vanier: (D) Braves Vs Lumberjacks: Game of the night, wow, what a great game, if I have one complaint it would be the whining from the Lumberjack bench about everything, but the game itself wow, two goaltenders that wouldn’t give an inch and making outstanding saves time after time. The only blemishes against them came in the shoot out, where as Braves would score twice, to Lumberjacks once. What a great game played by all 1-0 Braves after the shoot out. GAME STARS – #31 – STEPHANE PORTELANCE – BRAVES AND #1 ARTHUR BRAATEN – LUMBERJACKS

Now lets get onto the games tonight at Vanier and St Laurent:

6:00 Vanier © Ducks Vs Assassins: Second place vs Second last, should be a blow out, #90 Alexander Bisson and his Ducks know that the season is still seeing the goose egg in the loss column and they would like to keep it there, playing well so far, going up against a team, #26 Jeff Squires and his Assassins who have yet to really find stride, but they did win their last game to get on the board, was that the launching pad, or do they go back to where they were. Prediction: Ducks 4-3

7:00 Vanier © Storm Vs BH Stingers: This should be a great game. #12 Lenny Mills knows his team is up against a very well playing Storm team. For Lenny and his BH Stingers to remain in first place after tonight’s games, they have to come up with a victory, and it will be tough against #12 Nick Schubert and his Storm who have controlled the last few games and are on a big time roll right now, unstoppable looking. Prediction: 3-3 Tie.

7:00 St Laurent © Le Big Club Vs Shake & Bake: #13 James Holden and his Shake & Bake coming off a game where they probably were robbed a point, but at least did get a point in the standings, know this is a game they have to grab another point if not two and start climbing the standings. #8 David samara and his Le Big Club, have had an up and down start to the season and would like to turn it all around tonight. Two teams with great work ethics. Prediction: 2-2 Tie

8:00 Vanier (M) Thundercats Vs Jets: Master rules in affect here. #7 Scott McDougall knows his Thundercats are in need of a victory in a bad way, they know they don’t have many chances to meet up with a team that shares some of their scoring problems, well on this night they do, the Jets have as much trouble putting ball into nets they do. #87 James Brown and his Jets are hoping they can put up a back to back wins, only in order to close the gap on invaders in Masters. Prediction: Jets 3-1

8:00 St Laurent (© Jackals vs Chiefs: #17 Danny Mullins the C leading scorer knows there is more to scoring goals, they musts top them too and that has been the problem of the Chiefs, they must play a two way game to support the defensive side. Playing a tough team like Jackals you will need it. #13 Dave Martynuik and his Jackals are ;looking like they are getting their game back, the fact they are starting to play like a team that has been together for awhile could scare a few teams in their path. Prediction: 3-3 Tie

9:00 Vanier (B) Hitmen Vs Ottawa 69s: #67 Mich Kabouchi and his Ottawa 69s just seem to be unstoppable at this moment, still undefeated in the season. Rolling over opponents like a hot knife going through butter. Definitely have made things look easy for themselves. #10 Bryan Wood and his Hitmen, are in need of victories to start to climb the standings, the top three teams are starting to climb away from them, so this victory would be key but hard to manifest. Prediction: Ottawa 69s 6-3

9:00 St Laurent: (D) Nordiques vs Capital A’s: Two fast young teams in this one, should be a great tilt. #15 Kyle Stairs and his Capital A’s look to maintain pace with the Braves need to get this victory under their belt, if they stay patient they should be able to get a few power plays out of this game which they have been great on as of late. #24 Olivier Vermette and his les Nordiques need to stay out of the box use their speed and hopefully grab the victory and be in fourth place after tonight’s games. Prediction: Capital A’s 5-3

10:00 Vanier (D) Wrangler Vs Fumbuckers: #10 Corey Cranley Twolan and his Fumbuckers want to keep a winning sprit, only way by doing that is win games, he knows the Wranglers are a last place team that shouldn’t be taken for granted as they proved that over the past game, they can get it done. #29 Jason jenks and his Wranglers are a team that has started the feeling of winning now, now it is time to keep it going, one thing they must get down is the bitching at the officials, nothing will go there way if this continues, play the game boys play it well. Prediction; Fumbuckers 2-1

10:00 St Laurent (D) Wheels Vs Dogg Pound: wow, when we talk about key games early in the season, this is what we mean, two teams very much under achieving meet here. #83 Travis Cullen and his Wheels, need to start playing as a team and doing what it takes to win, playing as a team it starts there but they need a won just to get into night spot. #65 Tyler Nutall and his Dogg Pound are in the same boat, they just need to stick to the game plan play the game, not worry about what the ref is doing or not and play hard, they too know ninth is a joke for them they are a much better team. Prediction: Wheels 2-1

SLAPSHOT #17
“DUCKS SURVIVE STORM”
SUNDAY MAY 13, 2012

First off to all you mom’s out there, Happy Mother’s Day, to you all and hope your day is special.

What a way to end the week off, some great hockey, although a couple of guys will be wishing they were there to play hockey and not waste peoples times, but enough of them, weather was cool and wet after the games but the action on the floor was absolutely like sunshine, great games, great efforts, well done to those. Some key achievements, #24 Ryan Stephens (Capital A’s) had the hat trick, and how about #99 Chris Lawrey (Capital A’s) his first game in GOBHA and he grabs a five-point night.

Before I go any further: two reminders from league meetings:

1) Quit bitching at the officials, or I will allow them to bitch back, got it!!! When a call is made it is DONE!!!!

2) Abuse to a league official or game official will not be tolerated at all, use your captains voice with the league. Take it in your own hands, pay the consequence.

Game of the night comes out of the C division, The storm certainly is giving everyone some games as of late, the team that didn’t even make the playoffs last year, are on a roll. They scored the first goal of the game and the last goal of the game against the Ducks, but did they win the game?

Q: What do a fine wine and the Washington Capitals have in common?
A: They both spend a lot of time in the cellar, cost too much and are only enjoyed on select occasions.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK – WEEK FOUR

A DIVISION – #87 JAMES BROWN – YOUNG GUNS
B DIVISION – #94 ZACK RHEAUME – ATTACK
C DIVISION – #17 JUSTIN RUDOLPH – DRAGONS
D DIVISION – #10 DAVID LAFLEUR – BRAVES
E DIVISION – #71 PATRICK ISABELLE – OTTAWA KINGS
M DIVISION – #3 PIERRE CARON – INVADERS

How about your Ottawa Fat Cats Baseball team, well they are off to a struggling start so far this season, just lost in Barrie Saturday 3-1 to the Baycats and Sunday are in Kitchener to take on the Panthers. So their record stands at 1-3 good for sixth place in the early season.

6:00 St Laurent: (D) Rebels Vs Fumbuckers: What a great game to open the night and it could very well been the game of the night. The lead changed three times before the game was through. #53 Herb Beagon was his usual self and making save after save keeping his rebels in the game, as a matter of fact we wonder how he keeps going. Now don’t look any further than the other side of the rink #31 Greg Chamberland was doing pretty well the same thing, keeping his team alive, well the battle sent the game into the shoot out. Both teams took advantage of the tired goalies, but when all was said and done it was still a 3-3 tie, great game. GAME STARS – #53 HERB BEAGON – REBELS AND #31 – GREG CHAMBERLAND – FUMBUCKERS.

7:00 St Laurent: (D) Braves Vs Shanks: Back to back great games, two great teams, the two top teams in the division went head to head in this battle and it was nothing less than great. Shanks led most of the way but with just under seven minutes left the high powered Braves offence came to life, In the form of #10 David Lafleur. Dave would score a power play goal to tie the game and then set up the game winner with just under four minutes left in the game, make the final 2-1, in a great battle. GAME STARS – #10 DAVID LAFLEUR – BRAVES AND #72- MATT BLOIS – SHANKS.

8:00 St Laurent: © Storm vs Ducks: Game of the night, not sure where these Storm victories are coming from, but certainly making a fan of a lot of us. Scoreless at the half, about six minutes into the second half, the light starts to flash, both teams would score just over a minute apart to keep it tied at 1-1. Ducks would pull ahead with just seven minutes left in the game, only to see Storm tie it up with just under three left. Then both goalies would stand on their heads and shut out the side in the shoot out for the hard fought and very well played 2-2 ties, wow what a game. GAME STARS – #31 – KEVIN CHARTIER – STORM AND #31 MARC OLIVIER BERGERON – DUCKS

9:00 St Laurent: (D) Capital A’s Vs Wheels: #99 Chris Lawroy, playing in his first GOBHA game ever, was all that the Capital A’s needed in this one. Chris would score a pair of goals, one being on the power play and add a helper in the first have to get his Capital A’s out to the 6-0 lead, they would put on the cruise in the second half, where Chris would pick up his fifth point on the night in his teams 8-3 victory. The win allowed the Capital A’s to move into second spot in the division a spot they are more comfortable with. GAME STARS – #99 – CHRIS LAWROY – CAPITAL AS’ AND #1 – WAYNE ARMSTRONG – WHEELS.

10:00 st Laurent: (D) Vikings Vs Lumberjacks: Absolute joke guys, two classy teams and this happens, wow. Remember guys I will throw the book at anyone who tries to start a fight off the floor, classless. Vikings 4-2, GAME STARS – #16 JOHN STRUTHERS – VIKINGS AND #1 – ARTHUR BRAATEN – LUMBERJACKS

Now onto tonight’s great action from Vanier and Delude:

4:00 Vanier: (E) Plan B Vs Streetrats: #7 Nick Caronetto and his Plan B have given up a tong of goals lately, they haven’t played the way they started the season, like the team is not gelling anymore, he must try to right the ship and get them back to the happy zone again. #4 Christian Hamelin and his Streetrats, haven’t really been lighting it up offensively but defensively they have been playing pretty good, to get the victory in this one and start to move up the standings they will need more of it. Prediction: Plan B 3-1

5:00 Vanier: (E) Ottawa Kings Vs Therapists: Wow this is going to be a great one, two teams with a lot of talent will face off in this one. #71 Patrick Isabelle and his Ottawa Kings have been waiting for this one, taking on the only undefeated team in the “E”, they have the speed that could win this game if they play it smart and not get too caught up in being competitive. #16 Ryan O’Byrne, maybe one of the, if not the best player in the division and he will have to be that guy to make sure his team stays undefeated, watch a match. Prediction: Ottawa Kings 4-3

5:00 Delude: (E) Yellow Bellies Vs Moscow Selects: Two teams who have lost a couple of games and want to get out of the funk, are looking at this game to be the one to launch them, #11 Mario Pizzuto and his Moscow Selects know they haven’t had the best of a run their past few games, but he will need to step up and lead the way to get his team back on track. #68 Denis DiGaetano and his Yellow Bellies would love nothing more than to get back on track, they had a few games of big time promise and would like to return to that feeling, speed will be needed. Prediction: Moscow Selects 4-2

6:00 Vanier: (E) Blue Eagles Vs Gong Show: This is a battle for fourth position in the division, #23 Matt Romain and his Gong show have won back to back games, for the first time since anyone can remember, I think the last time was when the Leafs won the Stanley Cup, but it doesn’t matter they are having fun. #7 Doug Tattrie and his Blue Eagles are coming off a great team building game, where the platoon of the two goalies they have worked amazingly together, but in this game they have a huge offensive gifted team coming after them. Prediction: 3-3 Tie

6:00 Delude: (M) Jets Vs Steelheads: Masters rules in affect here. Well you can bet that #98 Andrew Maxwell and his steelheads are looking forward to this one, at least they have something in common with the team they are playing and that is they are both in last place of their divisions. #87 James brown and his Jets are hoping to get another W as they have fallen far behind the Invaders in the Masters division but it is all getting the teams et for the Playoffs one game at a time to build this thing. Prediction: 2-2 Tie.

7:00 Vanier: (B) Bubba J’s Vs Fog Devils: #19 Ahmed Mahfouz and his Bubba J’s coming off a great game, however a loss, but still a great game, he would like nothing more than to put his team back in the winning circle, he also knows he is playing a great team, that just seems to be getting better with each passing game. #29 Randy Blondin, has just exploded out of the gates offensively and he knows when his whole team is there they have size and strength that can win them games alone, should be a beauty. Prediction; 4-4 tie.

7:00 Delude: (M) Invaders Vs Attack: Two big boys going at it here, not to mention the history these two teams have with each other, no love loss let me tell you. #94 Zack Rheaume, playing against dad in this one. Zack knows his teams is one of two teams undefeated in the B and a victory in this one would be absolutely huge in making a statement to the division. #3 Pierre Caron and his Invaders are also undefeated so far this 2012 season and they have pretty well dominated the Masters division from the get go, so no worry in the Jets catching them but to beat teams as good as Attack, would be a notch in their crown. Prediction: Attack 6-5.

8:00 Vanier: (B) Flying Frenchmen Vs Hull Volant: Two teams who haven’t been blowing the win column off hook up here. #9 Stephane Ducharme has seen his Flying Frenchmen play off and on this year so far after last game he is hoping that was the building block for moving forward, playing a team that hasn’t got a victory yet sometimes is tough as he knows they will come out eager. #44 Tony Antonecchia, knows his team has had a horrid time in putting balls to the mesh and knows they have to get some kind of offence going. Prediction: Flying Frenchmen 3-1

8:00 Delude: (A) Young Guns Vs Capital H’s: Here we start with the big boys, top versus bottom. This could be a bad one to watch as far as blow out goes. #7 Scott McDougall and his Young Guns who lead the “A” division are taking on a team that hasn’t even recorded a point yet in their first season in the “A”. #23 Ryan Sterling and his Capital H’s know it is just a matter of time they just got to keep working hard and keep using their speed and good things will happen, they have been in most games that is for sure. Prediction: Young Guns 4-2.

9:00 Vanier: (D) Traitors Vs Shanks: another great game here, two highly offensive teams with a lot of speed going at this one, This should be a great game. #19 Tyler McCloskey and his Traitors know this game is for a share of second place in the division, so a victory would be huge, not to mention a great measuring game against a great Shanks team. #70 Scott Audette and his Shanks coming off a tough 2-1 loss to the Braves look to get back on track and show the Braves how lucky they were. Prediction: Traitors 3-2

9:00 Delude: (A) Wolf Pack Vs Wild: This should be a good one to end the night at delude, #93 Danny Marion knows they are up against a huge opponent tonight but is also aware that his team is depleted with injuries at the moment so pulling out bodies, and quality bodies is slim to rare, will do their best. #3 Brennan Sarrazin and his Wild who have been showing up with less and less players each week may get eventually stung and this speedy Wolf Pack team may do it. Brennan is hoping his team can stay undefeated. Prediction: Wild 3-2.

10: Vanier: (D) Braves Vs Lumberjacks: #10 David Lafleur has his Braves out to the undefeated season and would like nothing more than for his boys to keep having the fun they are having and keep the “0” in the loss column, playing a veteran team, which has been struggling, but he knows they can pope out of it at anytime. #11 Dave Sauve and his Lumberjacks, coming off a bad game and a suspended player are now faced with losing their second game in a row (When was the last time this team done that)? Prediction: Braves 4-2.

If anyone out there is taking photos of the league, would you mind getting a hold of Lyne Viau, we would like to have them posted, Lyne can be reached at lyne.steve@rogers.com

“WHERE REAL BALL HOCKEY IS PLAYED“

SLAPSHOT #16

GREATER OTTAWA BALL HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
SLAPSHOT #16
“BH PUTS THE STING INTO JACKALS”
WEDNESDAY MAY 9, 2012

To start off with I want to wish one of our brothers Jay Campbell (Wolf Pack) a speedy recovery, Jay had a terrible accident while hunting but is recovery very well, see you soon buddy.

It was a rainy, cool night in the parking lot, but on the floor it was anything but. Floors are starting to get better and the hockey is too, number of games last night could have been the game of the night with how well played and close they were. Great laughs jokes and sportsmanship throughout most of the games, just the way GOBHA likes it. A couple of upsets thrown into the night just make it that much more entertaining. Now onto the personal achievements from last nights games. Shutouts bys #31 Kevin Chartier (Wranglers, Hat trick by #87 Jeff Guillery (Ottawa Kings), the big point getter on the night goes to #71 Patrick Labelle (Ottawa Kings) with a five point night.

Game of the night comes out of the C division, BH stingers Vs Jackals, for the second straight nigh the game of the nigh comes to you from the C division. With just over five minutes left in the game, we hear “and he sccccoooorrrrrrrreeees” who took the lead?

Last nights action saw:

6:00 St Laurent: (D) Wranglers vs Les Nordiques: Not a great way to start the night off, big mouths and fools. Wranglers win 2-0. GAME STARS #29 JASON JENKS – WRANGLERS AND #1 MICHEL GERVAIS – LES NORDIQUES

7:00 St Laurent: (B) Hitmen Vs Attack: Okay so after that first game, we now settle down to some great hockey and wow, what an entertaining game. These are the ones we love. #87 Danny McCloskey and his Attack team, had a tough one on their hands tonight, at the half leading 2-1, with one of the two being off the stick of Danny. With just over three minutes left Danny would set up the insurance goal and his Attack would go up 3-1, the final would end 3-2 as the Hitmen never gave up, what a great game. GAME STARS – #87 DANNY MCCLOSKEY – ATTACK AND #6 ADRIEN FREI – HITMEN

8:00 St Laurent: © Jackals Vs BH Stingers: Another great game, and wow what speed in this one, two quick teams and evenly matched let me tell you, but by the end of the night the only difference was #1 Ron Islam, Ron was remarkable when called upa dn was the main reason his team had the ability to walk away with the victory. With the score tied at 1-1 at half time, Ron would continue to blank the Jackals allowing his team to squeak out the 2-1 victory, great game. GAME STARS – #1 RON ISLAM – BH STINGERS AND #5 MARCO PILLARD – JACKALS.

9:00 St Laurent: (E) Ottawa Kings Vs Plan B: Not quite sure what happened here, di Plan B fall apart or is the Ottawa Kings that good? Just chalk it up as one of those nights. One of those nights came out of #71 Patrick Isabelle, who led the onslaught, Patrick would have a goal and two helpers in the opening half, his team out to the 4-0 lead. In second half it would open wide and he would grab a pair of goals and one more helper, wow what a night for him and his team, 9-0. GAME STARS – #71 – PATRICK ISABELLE – OTTAWA KINGS AND #1 – WILLIE LEBLANC – PLAN B

9:00 Blackburn: (A): Wild Vs Capital H’s: Definitely a better game than the score indicates, Capital H’s gave Wild all they could handle trust me. However over a course of the game it is tough to hang on with the talented team, al though they tried. #12 Mike Henter is tough to control for a shift imagine a game, well he would tally for his Wild to open the scoring. After that he would add a couple of helpers to lock the final in at 4-1. GAME STARS – 12 – MIKE HENTER – WILD AND #17 – DEREK KELLY – CAPITAL H’S

10:00 St Laurent: (D) Traitors Vs Dogg Pound: Just what we thought this one would be a low scoring affair, very defensive and that is what it was. Dogg Pound opened the scoring right off the opening face off, and I think that is what woke up #19 Tyler McCloskey and his Traitors. Tyler would go on to score a pair of goals in the first half and get his Traitors out to the 2-1 half time lead, something that would remain the rest of the way due to the defensive shell both teams had. GAME STARS – #19 – TYLER MCCLOSKEY – TRAITORS AND #91 JEREMY LOCKETT – DOGG POUND

10:00 Blackburn: (A) Young Guns Vs Wolf Pack: This was another great game, fast paced, and the score doesn’t tell you how close it really was. At the half the Young Guns were up 3-0 and it was pretty well the only three errors that Wolf Pack made in the half, but all three were capitalized on, that is the difference between a vet team and a rookie team. #31 Mark Yeates who made a number of great saves to allow his Young guns the confidence in their offensive attack. Make the final 5-1 Young Guns as they remain in first. GAME STARS – #31 MARK YEATES – YOUNG GUNS AND #23 – BEN ROBILLARD – WOLF PACK.

Now onto tonight’s hot GOBHA action from St Laurent:

6:00 St Laurent: (D) Rebels Vs Fumbuckers: #7 Phil Lavigne, and his Rebels have been hit with the injury bug (Happens to older guys), all kidding aside they don’t have a big bench of players and now with two key ones on the shelve, things could be tough for the already struggling squad. #10 Corey Craney-Twolan and his Fumbuckers coming off a huge victory over the Lumberjacks, look to keep their winning streak going. The team is playing so well at this moment. Prediction: Rebels 4-2.

7:00 St Laurent: (D) Braves Vs Shanks: The top two teams battle off here tonight with first place in the division up for grabs. #8 Pat Portelance, leads the division in scoring and also leads his heavily loaded offence on the Braves team. He knows to beat the best team you must play as a team from start to finish. #70 Scott Audette, knows his team just ahs to bounce back, a bad game last game by all, seen them get pasted, they don’t want it to be back to back. Scott will need to match the offence of the Braves. Prediction: Braves Braves 4-3

8:00 St Laurent: © Storm vs Ducks: Normally I would have been putting this one down as a Ducks pasting but the way the Storm have played lately, hmmm let me think. Tough to not pick #90 Alexandre Bisson and his Ducks, they just seem to have the full package and can play any type of game you want, and there speed, wow. However the other hand #12 Nick Schubert and his Storm have just been rolling over teams as of late, and teams they were nto suppose to, so mayyybbbbbeeeee. Prediction: Ducks 4-3.

9:00 St Laurent: (D) Capital A’s Vs Wheels: #7 Scotty McDougall and his Capital A’s have shown up finally, the start was slow but the finish is string, they don’t come with a lot of bodies but they come with heart and effort and a lot of scoring talent, back that up with a very mobile defence, they have the package. You have to feel for #83 Travis Cullen and his Wheels, who just cannot get it going, they have been dropping games, that are not even close, well this one tonight is no easy frame for them again, good luck. Prediction: Capital A’s 5-2.

10:00 st Laurent: (D) Vikings Vs Lumberjacks: #96 Phil Larocque and his Vikings have four teams in between them and the Lumberjacks, by the end of the night, with a victory here the Vikings could be ahead of the lumberjacks, that is how tight the standings are. #11 Dave Sauve, just hopes it isn’t a repeat of what went down the other night after they got shellacked by Fumbuckers, he hopes his team is coming with the compete mode in them this time, otherwise it could be an early night. Prediction: Vikings 3-2.

SLAPSHOT # 15

GREATER OTTAWA BALL HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
SLAPSHOT #15
“SHAKE & BAKE / HC RED JACKETS FIT TO BE TIED”
TUESDAY MAY 8, 2012

The night started out perfect, nice cool breeze filled the air of the parking lot after the games, great chats had by all. The hockey was amazing and upside down, teams we thought would win, fell. Goalies that never get scored on, lit up. However, through it all emotions were great, games were great and you are all great. Thanks for a great evening to you all. Caught on the floor were many smiles, with players and officials. That is what it is all about. Now onto the personal achievements from last nights games. Shutouts bys #31 Kevin Chartier (Assassins), GOBHA’s first ever Goalie goal, #31 Nick Ghattas (Ottawa 69s), Hat tricks by #11 Tyler Glover (Chiefs), #27 Lee Beoyen (Dragons) Five goal night by #96 Phil Larocque (Vikings), not to mention Phil did end the night with count em six-points.

Game of the night comes out of the C division, Shake & Bake Vs HC Red Jackets, going into the final shooter, Shake & Bake has a chance for the victory, what happens?

Q: What do college students and the Toronto Maple Leafs have in common?
A: They’ve both finished their year by April.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK – WEEK FOUR

A DIVISION –
B DIVISION –
C DIVISION –
D DIVISION –
E DIVISION –
M DIVISION – #3 PIERRE CARON – INVADERS

How about your Ottawa Fat Cats Baseball team, which opened up their 2012 season in Guelph last weekend, they were victorious 5-4 and then taking on Toronto on Sunday fell 6-4 So their record stands at 1-1 good for third place in the early season. Remember Fat Cats tickets are FREE for GOBHA players simply email me at dballoch@ottawafatcats.com in the subject line GOBHA and how many tickets you want for what game.

Last nights action saw:

7:00 Vanier © HC Red Jackets Vs Shake & Bake: What a way to start the night with the game of the night. Both teams came out like gang busters with Shake & Bake taking a 3-2 half time lead, but the play was so evenly matched you knew it wouldn’t stay that way. We were right early in the second half, the HC Red Jackets would tie it up on the power play. Both teams used the power play to tie the game #17 Jason Taylor had his turn with the HC Red Jackets as did #13 James Holden equal the task with Shake & Bake, so it came down to the shootout, where it appeared Shake & Bake had scored as a ball rolled through the legs of the HC Red Jackets but waived off before it crossed the line, the game would end up in a 3-3 tie. GAME STARS – #17 – JASON TAYLOR – HC RED JACKETS AND #13 JAMES HOLDEN – SHAKE & BAKE

7:00 St Laurent: (D) Rebels Vs Les Nordiques: This game was actually a lot closer than the score indicated. A bit chippy at times as well, two great teams with a bit of an edge but it was kept in check, so well done. #19 Olivier Vermette and his les Nordiques gave up the first goal of the game and then fought back to have the 2-1 half time lead. However, the second half belonged to Olivier. He would set up a power play goal with just under seven minutes left in the game, to give his team the 4-1 lead, a lead they would not look back on as two empty nets, one by Olivier would give the Les Nordiques the 6-3 victory. GAME STARS – #19 OLIVIER VERMETTE – LES NORDIQUES AND #29 – DONNIE MASSON – REBELS.

8:00 Vanier: © Dragons Vs Chiefs: This was one of those great entertaining games, both teams had tons of scoring opportunities, but both goaltenders were up to the challenge, the save of the year coming off Dragons goalie. Mid way through the second half. #27 Lee Beoyen, was having the game of his GOBHA life. Completed the hat trick with just under six minutes left along with his helper, Lee would have a four point night and give his Dragons the 5-3 victory, great entertaining game to watch and the Chiefs were never out of this until the buzzer went, well played all. GAME STARS – #27 – LEE BEOYEN – DRAGONS AND #11- TYLER GLOVER – CHIEFS

8:00 St Laurent: (B) Thundercats Vs Ottawa 69s: This game was a lot more entertaining than I thought it would be, credit to the Thundercats for not quitting, good on you all. However how bad is the season going for the T Cats, bad enough to have the first goalie ever score a goal on you in GOBHA history. The key to the game though was #19 Will Aiello, playing his first game of the season, picked apart the Thundercats Defence for a pair of goals and a helper giving his Undefeated Ottawa 69s the 6-3 victory, well played by all. GAME STARS – #19 – WILL AIELLO – OTTAWA 69S AND #7 – SCOTTY MCDOUGALL – THUNDERCATS

9:00 Vanier: © Le Big Club Vs Assassins: I won’t lie this one was kind of a surprise, not so much that #26 Jeff Squires and his Assassins won the game but how they did it, usually Le Big Club plays a great defensive game, and allows their offence to get on track, neither of those took place and Jeff would up with a pair of goals and a helper. #31 Kevin Chartier turned back all the shots for the 6-0 Assassins victory, giving the Assassins their first win of 2012. GAME STARS – #26 JEFF SQUIRES – ASSASSINS AND #53 PAT LEMAY – LE BIG CLUB

9:00 st Laurent: (D) Vikings Vs Shanks: #96 Phil Larocque and his Vikings got off to a bad start this 2012 schedule, but since then they have turned it on big time, back to back wins will get you in the mood. Phil counted for five of the six goals his team score, en route to handing the Shanks their first loss of 2012, by the tune of 6-1. It is like that way in most sports, once you get believing in yourself, it becomes contagious and the Vikings are contagious right now. GAME STARS – #96 PHIL LAROCQUE – VIKINGS AND #17 CHRIS FROST – SHANKS.

10:00 Vanier: (D) Lumberjacks Vs Fumbuckers: Just another one fo those weird games, nights I guess. Again, not that I would never think Fumbuckers couldn’t beat Lumberjacks, but it was how they did it and against who, I am not sure if #31 Arthur Braaten (lumberjacks) have ever has had 5 goals scored on him in a week. Yet on this night #10 Corey Craney-Twolan and his mates found it 5 times. Corey himself led the charge with a goal and three helpers in his teams 5-1 victory, the shut out bid was broken with just over two minutes to go. GAME STARS – #10 – COREY CRANEY-TWOLAN – FUMBUCKERS AND #19 – MATT HOLLAND – LUMBERJACKS

Now let’s get onto tonight’s hot GOBHA action from St Laurent and Blackburn:

6:00 St Laurent: (D) Wranglers vs Les Nordiques: #24 Olivier Vermette and his Les Nordiques, take to the floor coming off a 6-3 victory last night. Do they have tired legs, they usually only come out with 8 to 9 runners, this is one thing that falls right into the Wranglers hands as #11 Ike Diakoumeas and his Wranglers usually have a full bench, if they can put the running into the game right off the bat, they maybe able to get their first victory of the season. Prediction: Les Nordiques 4-1.

7:00 st Laurent: (B) Hitmen Vs Attack: Big clash here for sure. With Attack being one of two teams without a loss so far in 2012, you can bet #94 Zach Rheaume, wants nothing more than to match his team up at 6-0 with Ottawa 69’s. One thing they know for sure this team will give them a better game than their 10-0 posting they did last game. #19 Bryan Wood and his Hitmen, who have played some great ball hockey as of late are looking to come within a point of the Attack team with a victory in this game, should eb a beauty. Prediction: Attack 7-3

8:00 St Laurent: © Jackals Vs BH Stingers: Ahhh we meet again, the first year Jackals were in GOBHA in D, they had met the BH Stingers, with the Jackals winning and moving up this is their first time seeing each other since. #13 Dave Martynuik and his Jackals who have been off for a while should be well rested for this one, you can count on a lot of speed in this one that is for sure. #44 Connor Barrette and his BH Stingers, have made everyone notice, still without a loss in the standings, they know they will be in tough tonight. Prediction: 3-3 tie

9:00 St Laurent: (E) Ottawa Kings Vs Plan B: Good one here as well, from the E. #71 Patrick Isabelle an dhis Ottawa Kings have really turned it around a year a goon team that was never going anywhere to a season later a team with a real shot, and they come to play hockey, great turn around in one season. #7 Nick Carbonetto and his Plan B team have dropped a couple and would love nothing more than get back to the winning ways. Nick will have to have his team ready to play this one. Prediction: Plan B 4-3

9:00 Blackburn: (A): Wild Vs Capital H’s: These two teams didn’t meet that long ago and the Capital H’s only lost 3-1. In a very well played game. #3 Brennan Sarazin and his Wild, who normally don’t show up in numbers especially with the likes of a team that has not yet to win a game in 2012,. That would be fine to #23 Ryan Sterling and his Capital H’s, Ryan also knows that is his team brings their “A” game and runs hard they have a shot of an upset with a small Wild bench. The Undefeated Vs the winless, hmmm. Prediction: Wild 3-2.

10:00 St Laurent: (D) Traitors Vs Dogg Pound: #19 Tyler McCloskey knows his Traitors bring a bit more offence each game, they have the ability to get productions from many forwards, pretty well a rounded team, this is what gets them their wins, is the offensive onslaught and speed. However, they are playing against #65 Tyler Nutall and his Dogg Pound team, whereas scoring goals isn’t their forte, however defending against them is, so best them to keep the score close and try striking late. Prediction: Traitors 3-2.

10:00 Blackburn: (A) Young Guns Vs Wolf Pack: Here we go these two teams provided us with a real beauty of a game last week, even gave us a shoot out to give us more entertainment, #7 Scotty McDougall and his Young Guns know how close this team came to beating them last outing and will have to be better prepared for them this time. #93 Dany Marion and his Wolf Pack can move into within two points of the Young Guns with a victory here in this game, should be a tight one with the small rink as well. Prediction: Young Guns 4-3 (SO)

Another one of our cool nights for this time of the year, but it didn’t stop some great ball hockey and socializing, I want to thank everyone for respecting the rules of St Laurent arena, just helps us all get along. A couple of things they have asked me to ask you all about, is slamming the doors at St Laurent arena, when you get a penalty it is not the doors fault, please refrain from slamming them as it ruins the mechanics of the door at a costly replacement charge, I will work with you guys on this but mention it to your teammates please, just a favour they are asking us, lets try to abide. Now onto the personal achievements from last night. #19 Bryan Wood, (Hitmen) has a hat trick against bubba J’s and the big deal of the night #16 Jamie Brown leads the Jets to their first win, with a seven-point night, great night for all in that game. Only three games scheduled on this light evening but none the less it was great action. Chalk up a shut out for #1 Nick Lamb (Ottawa 69s) . #68 Denis Digaetano and #44 Eric Wannamaker (Yellow Bellies) each recording a three point night led the way in points. Just a really great night played by all, well done lads. (more…)
